Title: Let's see your hop plants!!
Post by: newf84 on May 04, 2016, 12:18:41 AM
Hey guys I'm excited to see that spring seems to be here so I wanna see pictures of everyone's hop plants and how they are doing. I know it's a little early for some of us of but let's post lots of pics as they grow. My fuggles plant that was given to me last year poked through the soil today!!!

You need to find a rhizome then you will have a much greater chance of success.

Here's a website I found and it list a few places you could get a rhizome or a plant in soil already.

I wish mine where that tall. I just pick 3 bines on my fuggles plant and cut the rest. The 3 I picked will be the ones I let grow all season anything else that pops up from here on out will be cut back right away.

Beautiful Jay!

Combat, that is some serious growth! Mine are starting to pick up pace as well. I have one worry, though; I see some evil creature has started to eat the leaves. Going to do some research and find a decent method for avoiding that. I think I've read that some plants can help keeping unwanted insects and larvae away from the hops. If I can avoid chemicals that would be best.

ladybugs help alot and i try and pick them buggers off.
also remember to feed your babies :)
i usually make a batch of Fish Emulsion to feed them once a week the first year.
my second year i did every 2 weeks
third year i got lazy and havent fed them yet :-[ poor hungry little plants

Hey, ladybug whisperer! How do I go about acquiring ladybugs, and go on to convince them to stay with my hops? The kind I know about has wings and fly pretty much where they please. I'll make sure they're fed too.

i didnt buy mine luckily we have them around, i just try and catch them and put them on my plants.
if you buy them make sure your nice to them, tell them how pretty they are, get them a nice House (https://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=ladybug+house&tag=googhydr-20&index=aps&hvadid=153649100767&hvpos=1t1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=13660022032234638615&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=e&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9004849&hvtargid=kwd-38942452&ref=pd_sl_26t0627nm6_e) and some Ladybug wine (http://wine.appellationamerica.com/vineyard/Ladybug_Winery.html) always helps too. but if you get them mad look out they turn vicious and will destroy your stuff  :o
on the serious side if you have ladybugs around do buy a house for them they will stay close and take care of your plants and veggies if you have a garden.

So to sum up: If you got charm you can get the local ladies, if not you can go on ladybug tinder and try your luck there. You need to provide for them, preferably a sizeable mansion with a full bar. Like true ladies they can easily become indignant, and will claim half your $hit and take away the house and your babies. I thought I didn't know too much about these insects, but this sounds awfully familliar...

if they dont produce alot dont cut the bine this year.
just pick the hops and leave the bine behind for next year.
i did this for my kent goldings and they are much better this year.

im amazed at the cascade hops i didnt feed them this year at all and they grew almost 25-30feet
this year.
i use a 10 foot pole then run strings to my chimney, thats about 20feet away.
the cascade bine is 2 feet away probably from the top of the chimney.
the Centennial hops are about 20 feet tall, but they seem to produce cones quicker.
this year i plan to cut the roots back to the crown before winter.
and try to save some of the rhizomes, so i can plant some at my property in Pennsylvania.

Getting hops now! I haven't feed mine any fertilizer this year at all either. I have been feeding them a bit of watered down wort (no hops in the wort) don't want cannibal plants lol(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170729/eb739de3895d1b1c338278dc935fb55a.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170729/3924a730b8414c70f5e185a1890df85d.jpg)

Looking good with your crops fellas! Mine aren´t going to be yielding much this year. We had a crappy summer in terms of temps, even by Norwegian standards. But my Saaz has developed a few cones:

So Combat32 .  .   .  Please give us an update on that beautiful crop of Cascade.

I know you were commenting about some of them burning out.  Not sure what that means, or what you can do to prevent that.

All I know is that those previous pics of a huge potential harvest of Cascade were amazing !

well my Cascade crop this year yielded the same as last 16oz, still good, but i lost almost 10-15oz to burnt/sunburned or over ripe :(
the ones under the bine that grew towards the chimney were fine the ones on top got burnt or what ever.
my Centennial hops just went brown, after the harvest the following weekend i found a caterpillar nest in the top center of the plant, which i think is what killed them.
next year i plan to pay more attention to the inside of the bines.
it will be an all out war on those caterpillars.

on another note i transplanted some of my cascade and centennial which both had a small amount of hops. this spring i plan to plant more at my property in PA.

Here’s this year’s crops on their way. Closest is the Willamette, then the Saaz, and on the far corner the Cascade is about 3 feet. The Saaz is about 7 feet now. Just finished taking care of the weeds and gave the hops fertilizer.

Here's a pic of some of the nests I cut out.
I couldn't reach them all, so I can only hope.

Combat32 sent me some Cascade and Centennial rhizomes earlier this year.

Thank God I didn't kill them, and frankly I wasn't expecting any hops from these baby plants, but I've got some mini hops that are now growing on the 10 foot sticks of EMT conduit !

I don't know much about hops, but if they are like most perennial plants I'm hoping they should double in size next year.

all right, you got hops  8)
glad to see they survived the trip, i knew they would.
they are a pretty hardy plant. but insects and other nasties can ruin your harvest >:(
next year make sure you use some twine to hold them. EMT can get pretty hot in the sun.
plus its easier for the bine to climb it.
