I love it:

It's free to download, it's easy and it helps me scale down recipes.

It's pretty uncomplicated.

Can someone explain just what "efficiency %" and "balance value" means when you are creating a recipe?

I know that "efficiency" is the ability to produce fermentable sugars.  IE.  Dextrose is 100% efficient, as it is pure sugar.  So you have have to adjust your grain bills accordingly.

The way I understand efficiency is as it relates to the mashing process. It's a rating of how efficient your mash process is in converting the starches in the grains to sugars. That number, plus any additional fermetables added all had up to OG and thus ABV once you know where the batch finished.

What about "balance value" then?

It's another way of talking about bitterness:

I used to use it - only thing I don't like about it is the fact that it does not accommodate for impact to fermentability for mash temps.

I'll use it for some of the tools still.
Fermenting:
17 BIPA

Bottle aging:
Oaked sour ale '16
Coffee stout '15
Oaked apple cider '15
Barleywine '14

Keg 1: Golden ale
Keg 2: Not-17 BIPA
Keg 3: Not-17 BIPA
Keg 4: Mongrel //
Keg 5: EMPTY :(

Mini keg 1: Golden ale
Mini keg 2: Empty!
Mini keg 3: Damo's BIPA

Pipeline: ??

I am not using any programs to brew with. I have seen you blokes talking about them but havnt downloaded one yet. at this stage of my brewing experience, (kit n kilo's with hop additions and steeped grains) would I benefit from doing so?or is it more for all grain brews?

I think using software, even very simple software really helps you to fine tune your ideas and gives more confidence when you're designing a beer from scratch or modding and existing recipe. It certainly helps to make you a better brewer.

if you don't want to install software, there's websites with calcutors on them too
