IBU's and pre-hopped kits
« on: August 29, 2015, 01:26:51 AM »

Giday guys, I’m not sure if this information is spoken of specifically (I think it has but I can’t remember) in a thread but if it hasn't I thought I’d share it with you all as I have found it very helpful.

CALCULATING IBU’s
As you know the pre-hopped kits come with a concentrated amount of IBU’s (international bittering units) *Example 270 IBU’s in a 1.7kg can of Mexican Cerveza* when this kit is added to 23 litres of water the IBU’s are diluted down to approximately 20 IBU’s.

In case you blokes weren't aware this is a simple equation you can use to help with your own calculations:

concentrated bitterness (270) x 1.7 / Brew volume (23) = Total bitterness

I've used this calculation many a time and it hasn't failed me sometimes it may be off by a few points (which can happen due to the natural fermentation process) but it’s very accurate IMHO.

IBU’s IN COOPERS KITS

Having this list likewise has helped me a lot

ORIGINAL SERIES:
Lager – 390 IBU
Dark Ale – 590 IBU
Stout – 710 IBU
Draught - 420 IBU
Real Ale - 560 IBU

INTERNATIONAL SERIES:
English Bitter – 620 IBU
Pale Ale - 340 IBU
Canadian Blonde - 420 IBU
European Lager – 340 IBU
Mexican Cerveza - 300 IBU

THOMAS COOPERS SELECTION RANGE:
Australian Bitter - 495 IBU
Heritage Lager - 390 IBU
India Pale Ale - 710 IBU
Irish Stout - 560 IBU
Pilsener - 420 IBU
Sparkling Ale - 490 IBU
Traditional Draught - 420 IBU
Wheat Beer - 300 IBU

IMPORTANT:

Remember when adding two pre-hopped kits together you are also combining the two concentrated bittering amounts! I only say this because if you are after a lighter style and low IBU beer be careful that you don’t add too much bittering to it unless that’s what you want (example 2x lager kits made to 23litres will make the end result approximately 57 IBU’s)

Hope this helps – 17!!!

One thing to keep in mind is that if you are adding a kilo or malt to add body and up the alcohol content you'll need to add some hops with beers that don't have a very high IBU rating.
Wandering Troubadour (Czech Pilsner)
Hippy Dippy Dunkle (German Lager)
---------------------------------------------
On deck to brew next:
Beatnik Peacenik  (Brown Ale)
Hobo Surprise  (Amber Ale)
Groovy Grover's English Porter
Bohemian Chic  (Canadian Blonde)
Daddyo Lager
