Strongbow recipe (any smaller versions?)
« on: February 27, 2016, 08:51:41 AM »
Shortly after chatting with Steamyb last night (who first got me into ciders), my daughter and her BF walked in with Strongbows.

I'm like "what about your Angry Orchards?"  They said they preferred Strongbow now, and offered me one.

Pretty dam tasty.  I think what I liked the most that it was more on the "dryer side" without being "too sweet".

So I searched the forum for "Strongbow", but only came up with a big 5.5 gallon batch that was posted by MWKilduff.

I'm hesitant just to cut all the ingredients down by some proportion because although I've never done that I've heard its not that simple when people tried it with brewing recipes.  Doesn't come out the same.

Any recommendations out there for a smaller batch recipe for a Strongbow clone?

( I'd be using 2 liter bottles with the Pat Mack's Caps )

I've never sized a recipe for cider.
But my ciders have always turned out very dry and I have to backsweeten.
You probably know that is the trick, for me the easiest way was to keg the cider and add 2-3 frozen apple juice concentrates to it. It was a sweet cider that finished dry very drinkable and after 2 or 3 you were in a happy place :o one of the guys on here does mostly ciders and may be able to help you out, I will edit the post once I find his name MWKilduff
cheers

I am happy to share.  Have you looked at the ciders I have made to determine what you want?  I have been working on what I am calling my BASE cider recipe.  I can give you different options but none of mine are smaller batches.  Back sweetening is one of the keys to success.  True cider will brew to a extremely dry drink.  I have a lot of experience and love every type of cider from sweet to dry and still to extremely carbonated.
I have mixed drinks about feelings.

I bought a couple of buckets to brew some small baches of ciders. Only one way to make yourself a patient guy. Brew more.

My ciders are always sweet enough (at least for me) to drink without any backsweetening at all. I'd put them pretty much on par with Strongbow on the dryness/sweetness scale. On the other hand, I may be full of shiitake, since I tend to get carried away and drive the alcohol percentage into the wine range; since cider yeast doesn't ferment all of the sugars, I may just be overloading the stuff with the sugars that the yeast leaves behind.

Have you ever had a Strongbow, MWKilduff? I've never managed to make a cider that approaches the taste of Strongbow. I wouldn't know where to start. I think it would be awesome if someone could clone the recipe...or at least make a good doppelganger.

Actually, it was the posting by MWKilduff that made me send him a PM to see if he got to the "Strongbow" tasting cider by starting with a smaller batch.

He's got some very unique ingredients that make up his 5 gallon batch.

If this thread doesn't pan out to a recipe for a smaller batch, I may just use a calculator and portion down his recipe.

Worst case scenario . . . I just follow the SteamyB procedure for making apply jack!

Not yet MWKilduff

No worries . . . If this forum thread doesn't pan out I'm going to take your recipe and calculate it down to a smaller batch.
