Beef in Beer
« on: March 26, 2016, 11:46:59 AM »
As I'm brewing and bottling today I thought I'd better make sure that my family don't go hungry. I have a slow cooker so put it on this morning and the stew should be ready in time for dinner.

I used about 1 1/2lbs of beef (I prefer shin but any cheap cut will do). After frying off the meat in a pan I put the meat in the slow cooker and then put a 500ml bottle of my brown ale in the pan to get all the good bits out and then dumped that in the slow cooker too. Veggies then went in, a couple of onions, a leak some chopped potatoes, carrots and a leak. Then about a pint of beef stock, a dash of Worcestershire sauce, some thyme, ground black pepper and a couple of bay leaves.

It's been going a few hours now and the whole house smells wonderful.  I will probably make a few herb dumplings later and put them in the pot for the last half hour of cooking.

Thanks steamyb. It went down really well with everyone. Especially nice accompanied with a glass of my AG Bitter. Dumplings really finished it off. For anyone interested they are made with 4oz self raising flour, 2oz vegetable (or beef) suet, pinch of salt, teaspoon of dried sage and enough water to bind to a dough. Split into 8 and add to the pot about 20-30 mins before you want to eat.

I've never used my own beer to cook with before but I have used shop bought beer before in my beef stew.  Usually a bitter or pale ale and nothing too hoppy as you said vic. I think I'll try my oatmeal stout in there next time.
