Ok, so the extract version has been bottled and I think we have a very comparable version to the original. I only tasted it at bottling time but so far so good IMHO. Here is the recipe I went with:

Coopers Dark Ale kit
1kg light DME
500g Dextrose

Steeping grains:
150g Caramunich
100g Carafa ll
100g Midnight Wheat

Hops:
2 oz Mosaic
2 oz Amarillo
2 oz Simcoe

Yeast: US-05

OG-1.052 / FG-1.008

In a muslin bag steep crushed grains in 10L of 170F water for 20 minutes, crystal 60 will work too I’m sure as an alternate. Add dme and dextrose and bring to a boil, add 1 oz of each hop and boil for 15 minutes. Remove from heat and add 1.5L cold water to cool wort to approx 180F and let stand for 30 min. Add the Coopers kit and cool in an ice bath until ready to add to the fermenter. Top up will water to 21L, pitch yeast and ferment for 3 weeks. Add the remaining hops for the final week of fermentation.

I will get one of these to Craig in a month of so and see if he will review, having had 2 original AG versions from 2 separate brewers he should be able to give some thoughts on how this extract version compares.

Ok, here it is 5 days after bottling. We are onto something here. It definitely needs time to condition to get a full grasp after all is said and done, 4-6 weeks is ideal, but so far so good.

Just had another that is 7 days in the bottle. I am thinking that the carafa should be reduced to half of what I did as there is a bit of residual bitterness on the pallet. However, this is a respectable  version to the all-grain IMHO.

I take is back, this brew has lost that bitter finish and smoothed out nicely. This is a fine extract version of the 17 Black ipa. I hope someone will brew this and give there thoughts as well.
