Adding specialty grains and hops to extract brew
« on: February 27, 2017, 03:14:54 PM »
Alrighty I bought Some Specialty grains to help spice up my coopers kits
But I am not sure about how I should go about it. I’m been pretty used to lighter beers
And not too familiar with hop flavours.

I did a coopers lager and added in a hop tea
That I made with boiling water and Citra hops that I steeped for 20min and poured in after.
Was this the best way to taste the hops with out the bittering? I actually really enjoyed this beer but It took a
Long time to clear and when it did it was the last few pints in the keg.

I am planning to do a Coopers Lager kit With Extra light crystal Malt and Cascade hops.
Will this make an ok beer?
From what I have read would Steeping at 140-160F for 30 for the grains be correct?
And I’m not sure how I should add the hops I want more to experience there taste rather then there bitterness.

I also have
For Grains
Caramel Vienna
Light Crystal malt
Medium crystal malt

Hops
Cascade
Fuggle
Simcoe
Summit
Crystal

Coopers Kits
Lager
Real Ale
Dark Ale
English Bitter

Yeasts
Us-05
Us-04
Coopers
Nottingham Ale Yeast

Dry Gold light DME
Dark DME

Basically Im asking how I can add grains and hops to my simple coopers kits but not super
over powering so I can noticibly taste each new addition

Sorry long post

I would do a mini mash with maybe a pound of Vienna and 6-8oz light crystal.
Make sure the grains are crushed or crack them with a rolling pin.
Heat some water up maybe a gallon to 160f then add your grains stir them up real good.
Shut heat off cover pot with a heavy towel for 30-40mins.
Rinse grains with 170f water maybe 1 gallon.
Bring to a boil.
Add some hops maybe 1oz cascade boil for 40min
Add 1oz cascade at flame out.
Cool in the sink
Add your coopers lager top up with cool water pitch yeast
Hope that helps
cheers

OK, yeah i find with s-04 it brings the malt forward, whereas US-05 will provide more hop character. I prefer s-04 with darker beers but thats just me, happy brewing.
