Specialty beer - style guidelines
« on: January 31, 2016, 10:49:16 PM »
This category is for beers that are heavily influenced by flavors atypical of a beer, such as spices, fruits, herbs etc.

If you have brewed a beer which is complimented by these flavors, you could consider posting it in another category.

Some good examples of when to post here:
Coffee porter - is still very much a porter, so should probably be posted there
Pumpkin spiced pale ale - does not taste anything like a pale ale normally would, so would be fine to post here

Ultimately it's up to you, if you don't feel like your spice additions make it a spice beer - put it where you see fit.

Spiced ales
This style takes on and beer that is specially spiced. This is anything from the a pumpkin spiced beer to Christmas beers to hot peppers, anything with substantial spice additions to add a significant flavor to the beer. Typically things like your pumpkin beer will try to taste a bit like a pumpkin pie, Christmas ales like fruitcake etc. A lot of Belgian styles include small amounts of spice but would not be considered a spiced ale.

Gruit ale
Gruit (alternately grut or gruyt) is an old-fashioned herb mixture used for bittering and flavoring beer, popular before the extensive use of hops. Gruit or grut ale may also refer to the beverage produced using gruit.

Gruit was a combination of herbs, commonly including sweet gale (Myrica gale), mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris), yarrow (Achillea millefolium), ground ivy (Glechoma hederacea), horehound (Marrubium vulgare), and heather (Calluna vulgaris). Gruit varied somewhat, each gruit producer including different herbs to produce unique flavors and effects. Other adjunct herbs included black henbane, juniper berries, ginger, caraway seed, aniseed, nutmeg, cinnamon, and even hops in variable proportions.

Fruit beers
Beers which adopt a large flavor profile from fruit additions. Examples may include if you've added a few kilograms of cherries to a beer and it tastes a lot like cherries. Other styles such as fruit lambics should be posted under the appropriate style.
