Hop Rhizomes and plants
« on: July 29, 2017, 06:35:25 AM »
I decided to make a thread on hop rhizomes for anyone thinking of growing their own plants.
I have Cascade and Centennial hops, plus a wild hop that I think is a Kent Golding.
so I bought the Cascade and Centennial rhizomes going on 3 years ago and stuck them in our garden. the first year I only got a few ounces, the second year I got just over a pound of Cascade and 8oz of Centennial. The Kent Goldings I transplanted them into a flower bed and the first year I only got 6 hop cones last year I only got an ounce.
So where am I going with this? The size of the rhizomes yup, it seems to make a difference (thats what she told me ::) )  my Cascade rhizome was 8 inches long and almost 1/2 inch round, the Centennial was 6 inches and 1/4 inch round and the Goldings was 1 foot long and like an 1/8 inch round. Now I know there's probably more to this, but this is what I have found so far.
All got fed once a week with fish emulation and watered every other day.
Starting in late May to the end of July the first 2 years.
this year the Cascade and Centennial didn't get fed and I trimmed rhizomes off each of them.
The Cascade was again bigger the Centennial. I am attaching photos of them and you tell me what you think?
So in short if you get small rhizomes it may take longer to get a bigger harvest.
If you can choose them go for a bigger one.
Seems I have babbled enough on this, hope it helps

getting ready to prune my hop crowns for the first time.
My Cascade and Centennial crowns have rhizomes going 5 to 6 feet away.
so time to trim them up. planning to do this next weekend after Easter hoping the weather stays nice now.
if i remember i will take a few pics and update this section.
after pruning planning to get a taller pipe this year and have them grow straight up instead of at an angle.
we will see what i can come up with.

I don't really know your east kent Golding hop problem but its
is a traditional hop from the County of Kent in southeastern England. Although hops were first planted in the region by immigrant Flemish farmers around the beginning of the 1400s, East Kent Golding was released officially and commercially only a little more than a century ago, East Kent Golding's grown anywhere else in the world are referred to Golding hops, we grow Golding hops in Worcester, UK, probability is that the differences in soil maybe some of the problem, but one thing that I've noticed is that they grow goldings up string and not poles maybe try this combat. 17

Thanks those poles were just for the first season :) my other hops are in my garden and grow 25 feet tall Cascade and Centennial. the mystery hops are from my aunt and uncles farm in New York she had a friend give her a plant about 20 years ago and she planted it behind a shed. she never took care of them and they just grow everywhere.
i to a very small rhizome and brought back home with me. yeah so if they are a Golding variety, which i believe they are, I should call them Goldings :)
