Two packets left from a wine kit but I lost the directions.
« on: October 07, 2017, 10:16:11 PM »
I am ready to bottle. I like the taste and smell and am ready for my next kit. Problem is I have two packets left over and have no idea if I should add them. I know the order of adding but am not sure how long to wait until bottling. It says to add until clear but do I just wait 24 hours?  It's a merlot.

Please advise

is the other the kieselsol?
if you choose to add them i would wait at least a week for them to do there thing.
the kieselsol and chitosan are finings. so if your wine is clear already i wouldnt bother.
but if it looks hazy than i would add them.

It's dark as night and doesn't seem to be cloudy, had a glass last night and wazooooo  yummy!

Are these two ingredients purely for clarifying?

I think I will degas and add the Kielselsol today and then add the Chitosan tonight and leave for a week.  Since it's a kit I really should try doing it 'their way' even though I have extended the primary and secondary fermentation and added oak and tannin powder.

thanks

They are most definitely fining agents for clearing the wine. Like combat pointed out; if the wine is clear already just disregard those sachets and bottle with your heart at ease.

tip for ya   take a sandwich baggy and put the instructions in there and tape to carboy.
black dog brewery gave me some zip lock tank tags that work perfect for notes IE: dry hop additions.

it's a good time - the kit even came with something like that - next time I will actually use it!
