I'm very interested in the response you get from your question because somebody just gave me 3 extract kits that are 2 years old.

I know I need to toss out the hops, but does the liquid malt really go bad?

expired in October of 2017, i would grab them and brew them up.
add some fresh hops to the mix and/or some steeped grains.
you will get some great beers out of it.
17

Black Dog brewery i would use the hops but toss the yeast.
im planning to brew my molasses porter Monday.

I would look at it more like a best before date. It’s close enough imo.

Unless there's a breach in the sealed can there will be nothing wrong with it. The manufacturer has to put a best before date on it, but honestly it will be extremely hard to distinguish between that can you have an option to by, and one fresh off the belt at the factory when they're brewed up IMO.  I would definitely go for that offer and brew it up, not even thinking about questions of quality.

Just my 17 cents ;)

The last dozen Coopers kits I've brewed were well over a year out of date. I wrote a post here about the bad experience I had with the last one. I suggest that you either make a starter with the yeast that comes with it, or you buy a package of yeast from the local homebrew store to make sure that you've got viable yeast. Those cans have likely been stored in hot warehouses for some or all of their history and the yeast is dead, dead, dead.

I also made a video about my experience with one of them. I think that if your tastes aren't particularly refined, you won't care one bit about using old extract, pre-hopped or otherwise.

Thanks for the video.

I think I will take a shot at brewing the expired kits that were given to me.

Less the yeast of course.
