starter blow out on stove
« on: December 05, 2017, 09:16:44 AM »
well this is not my week. Saturday my pinky popped out of joint at the top knuckle so i popped it back. then my Aluminum pot imploded and last night i was making a starter to grow some yeast. i use my flask on the burner. well it reached the boil and i turned it down so it would be a rolling boil and the foam started to rise, so i do what i normally do grab it off the burner and it usually falls back down. not this time! it freaking erupted like mount St Helens! all over my hand stove and floor.
the only thing different this time i used a pot holder instead of my oven glove, which probably would of saved my hand from being scalded  :-[
needless to say i didnt have enough wort left in the flask to finish and spent the rest of the night with my hand in the sink with cool water and the other hand with beers to help easy the burning 8)
so becareful when making starters and get a silicon oven glove to protect your hand.

I hear ya! Lately I've been shit out of luck at my brew days. Somehing always acts up or breaks. Having said that, I still feel very sorry for your bad luck lately. Just don't make my mistake and go "Hey, shit happens, but it can't get any worse than this." Famous last words.

That's not going to happen at my house any time soon. With the steep angle and all the snow and ice up there now, I'm glad I cleaned out my gutters about 6 months ago while I was cleaning the surfaces of moss and other mess up there.

Wish I could share a brew with you now, but maybe next time!

Holy mackeral Combat! :o

Twas not your weekend.  I appeciate you sharing with the rest of us.  It just goes to show you that goofy things happen even to the most experienced of brewers....  How are your hands doing after all the abuse?

I was brewing an azacca IPA this past weekend when i pulled a batch of cultivated, washed s-04 from my fridge...  opened up the lid of the mason jar to find black mold along the inside of the top.  Obviously i must have forgotten to re-sterilize the lids for the final washing.  Sanitize sanitize sanitize....Good thing i had a clean batch of s-05 as a back up to create my starter.

Hope you feel better!

Cheers and 17!

doing better today, thanks
my hand looks like a bad sunburn  :o but luckily no blisters.
i had a bad burn years ago that they had to scrub with a orange bristle brush, that really SUCKED bad.
i bent the arm rest while they scrubbed it. that had to be the worst pain i think i ever felt, worst part was they had to do it again the next day. but i guess it was better then getting an infection.

i try and keep spare yeast around just in case something happens too
