Grain mill adjustment.
« on: January 12, 2018, 10:52:09 AM »
Hello.
Can someone tell me what gap i should have between my 2 roller malt mill. (Coobra).

I just bought myself a Grainfather and I'm trying to find out the best crush for it.

I tried milling with 1.2 mm but the grain seems a little too fine.
A little powder + some shredded "grainshell"
Sorry for my bad English.

Do u think 1.5mm would be too much?

Here is a picture of the 1.2mm crush

I took a creditcard and adjusted the rollers for that thickness.
the crush works great for my grainfather.
a tip add some rice hulls to the mash it helps stop a stuck sparge which you dont want on the grainfather.

I think you could actually decrease your gap setting. You have some kernels that look uncracked and plenty of husks still intact. The standard gap you'll hear a lot is actually 1mm, but a lot of brewers will go even lower than that. I don't know what mine is off hand, but it's definitely less than 1mm. If you're nervous about it, I would give it a try at the gap you have it set at (1.2mm) and see how it works. Then you can adjust the mill with each batch. Gap settings are dependent on your system, so it's something you have to try in order to really know.

one other tip on the grainfather.  I bought a large BIAB to put the basket in.
it helps to keep some of the grain particulates out of the boil.
just check your grains after you adjust, make sure all the husks are getting split and cracked.
remember some specialty malts are smaller then other's. like rye malt so you may have to adjust for them too.
I dont  :) if it doesnt look right i run it through the mill again

I built a mill myself, working in machine shop I built one from extra material laying around while we were in a slow period. I looked up what people are setting the roller gap at and made mine fixed in that position with no adjustment, about 1mm or so. I get about 80% efficiency so I am happy with that. Combat mentioned rice hulls, these work great, are cheap and go a long way.

Thank u guys for your feedback!

I talked with a guy who told me to try 1,5mm gap.

I tried it and i brewed with it.

To my big suprise, my efficiency was 81% !

I think i will leave it at 1,5mm.

BTW, my first allgrain smells amazing!
It's a SMASH pale ale with Citra.
