Sediment in the fermenter after 14 hours
« on: January 14, 2018, 06:04:06 AM »

Hello

I need some advice. i brewed my favorite yesterday (mangrove Jacks american ipa) 14 hours ago.

usually the airlock is bubbeling by now(12hours) , but what made me wondering is the sediment in the bottom of the fermenter. it looks like the yeast after fermentation, like when it has sunken to the bottom.
do anyone know what this is/means? do i need to worry?

thanks for any replys

Cheers

17!

Can you try to post a photo of what you are seeing, without opening the lid of your fermentation vessel?

you should be fine, that stuff at the bottom is probably just cold break.
once fermentation starts it will get all churned up.
also is your lid on tight?
i used M27 on my last Pale ale i did and it took almost 24hrs to kick off.
it turned out fine.

Sorry for the late chime in.

That looks like proteins flocculated at the bottom. Perfectly normal. I've seen yeast take up to 4-5 days to start producing enough pressure to have an active airlock.

Great,
did you re-hydrate the yeast before pitching or just added it dry?
I try and keep a brewlog with my brewday stuff ie gravities, ph and temps and more.
of course with kits you dont need all that info, however i do list my kits in their too with the yeast and anything i added to the kit. notes are great for the next time you brew it you can see what you did and change it if you want. ehh im babbling again

hi
i did not re-hydrate this time. i have not the impression that it matters. i made a batch of wheat bear the NeXT day And the standard yeast from muntons started the air-Lock mutch sooner/faster than the yeast from mungrove-craft.
under the same conditions i understand that the yeast behaves differently. wery interresting though.

im also good at babbeling!!! hehehe

It can very easily have to do with how old the yeast is. Dried yeast can last a long time, but consider the fact that it may need considerably more time to wake up if it has been dormant for a long time. Fresher dried yeast can start fermentation more promptly.
