How Long?
« on: January 14, 2018, 04:55:00 PM »
How long did it take you all for the bug to hit you? From the time you first decided to brew your first batch until you knew this was something you wanted to do, or NEEDED in your life? My wife bought me a Mr. Beer kit for Christmas (I know some people look down on it) but after receiving it and starting my first batch, I've done nothing but research, read, watch, explore, and drink beer. We moved out of the country about a year ago and live in wine country now, and I've learned to love wine, but I really missed beer.

Since Christmas day, I've already taken the plunge into 5 gallon kits (it's arriving in a couple days) and have ordered at least 5-6 different recipes at this time. I have to keep reminding myself not to go overboard because I've become a bit obsessed with this already. The science behind it (even though I'm doing extract and soon to partial extract), the process, and the final product have me hooked.

So I ask, how long did it take for the "bug" to take over?

Wow... very similar....  5 years ago I got my first Mr. Beer kit as a gift from my sons....  after I went through the 2 recipe kits, i immediately got my equpment for 5 gallon extract recipes.  For awhile there I was brewing almost every two weeks whether or not the household consumption required it.  When my grown sons are over more frequently, obviously the supply dwindles.. lol

Took my time with the extracts and partial mashes before making the jump to all grain, which i'm glad i did, although there are still times, like during the holidays where free time was lacking, i'll sneak in an extract recipe.

Welcome to the crew and the hobby.  I wish you many a great pours in the future!

Cheers!  17!

Not too long.  Once I saw a gradual improvement in quality I just wanted to brew more. Being someone who has always enjoyed beer helps for sure.

i got a Mr Beer kit a looong time ago. tried it thought ehhh its ok brewed the other tin that came with it.
wasnt impressed so i tossed it in the closet. then a few years back I was looking for something and found my old Mr Beer kit, pulled it out went to bed bath and beyond and picked up a refill kit that had two tins. Oktoberfest and a Wheat beer. brewed the wheat still wasnt impressed so i looked on youtube "how to make a Mr Beer kit better" low and behold CraigTube, started watching his videos and brewed the Oktoberfest with some brown sugar and it turned out pretty good. started looking up Homebrew equipment and Northern Brewer had a starter kit for $199 bucks figured i would try it out. it came with there Irish red which turned out great. watched more Craigtube started lurking the 17brewcrew then signed up and the rest is history.
i have learned alot from these brewers on here and made some friends too. took me 4 brews with the Mr beer kit before switching to 5 gallon extract, after 3 brews i started BIAB then started all grain. I still do all different ways extract, minimash, BIAB and all grain. blah blah blah Im rambling  :D
