Hop shot
« on: February 04, 2018, 02:18:59 PM »
Saw a recipe at Northern Brewer for their Plinian Legacy double IPA that requires the use of hop shots (5ml) x 2 or 10 ml of the concentrated hop oils.  I read that each ml of hop oil imparts 10 IBUs to a 5 gallon recipe (1.050 OG wort at 60 minutes).

First off, has anybody tried the recipe kit from NB?  What did you think if you did?

Secondly, if I were to just run to my LHBS, they don't carry hopshots.  How do I change the recipe to replace the hopshots?  Is this even a fair question to ask?

Thirdly, if you have a clone recipe of Pliny the Elder, could you share it with me?  We'd like to try to make it.

Thanks!

Cheers!  17!

ive been looking at that exact kit for a while now, just cant pull the trigger on it.
I have watched some homebrew videos with guys using the hopsjot and they said that it adds a different bitterness to the beer. so if that is the case not sure you could clone it with out it. I just cant bring myself to buy the kit for that much money :-[   that said you could look the recipe up and buy the hopshot and brew it your self. do you brew all grain?
i have seen lots of recipes out there, but i havent tried brewing one yet. sorry i cant be more help for ya

I've noticed more online HBS have started stocking Hop extracts, so you could probably just order some.

For anyone in the UK
https://www.themaltmiller.co.uk/product/co2-hop-extract-15ml/

The recipe for NB's Plinian Legacy:

BREWING NOTES:
- 2 packs of yeast (or a yeast starter) and 2-stage
fermentation is highly recommended for this beer.
- 6 gallon batch size - This recipe has been calculated to produce 6 gallons
to accommodate wort losses due to the ridiculous amount of hops
- 90 minute boil

O.G: 1.070 READY: 6 WEEKS
Suggested fermentation schedule:
- 2 weeks primary; 2–4 weeks secondary; 2 weeks bottle conditioning
MASH INGREDIENTS
- 14 lbs Malteurop American 2-row
- 0.75 lbs Briess Carapils
- 0.5 lbs Bairds Carastan

BOIL ADDITIONS & TIMES
- 0.25 oz Amarillo
FWH—add to boil kettle as wort drains from mash tun
- 10 mL (2x) Hopshot (90 min)
- 1 oz Columbus (45 min)
- 1 oz Simcoe (20 min)
- 0.75 lbs Corn Sugar (0 min late addition)

HOP STAND
Turn off heat, add Flame Out Hops.
Allow to stand for 10-15 min before chilling
- 1.5 oz Centennial (0 min—Flame Out)
- 2.5 oz Simcoe (0 min—Flame Out)

DRY HOPS
Add the dry hops in two different stages.
- Dry Hops #1: Add 10–14 days before bottling
1.5 oz Columbus, 1 oz Centennial, 1 oz Simcoe
- Dry Hops #2: Add 4–5 days before bottling
0.5 oz Columbus, 0.5 oz Simcoe, 0.25 oz Centennial, 0.25 oz Amarillo

YEAST (2 PACKS OR A YEAST STARTER)
- DRY YEAST (DEFAULT):
Safale US-05 Ale Yeast. Optimum temp: 59–75° F.
- LIQUID YEAST OPTIONS:
Omega OYL-004 West Coast Ale I. Optimum temp: 60-73°F.
- Wyeast 1056 American Ale. Optimum temp: 60–72° F.

Or available here if you prefer:
https://www.northernbrewer.com/documentation/allgrain/AG-PlinianLegacy1.pdf

I have this kit, just haven't got round to brewing it yet.

Keg1 - Ace of Spades BIPA
Keg2 - Wai-iti Pale ale
Keg3 -
Keg4 -
Keg5 -
Keg6 - Vienna Red lager

Bottle conditioning - Belgian Dubbel

FV1 - Coopers Real ale
FV2 - The Plinian Legacy
