GrainFather stopped
« on: April 01, 2018, 09:24:49 AM »
well i just got the new controller for my GrainFather the Connect.
brewed my Cascade IPA for the first time with it, had a few hickups with times, but everything worked great. this weekend i figured i had enough stuff to make another beer. so i made up a recipe for a Mosaic IPL 10lbs 2 row 8oz Vienna some Mosaic hops @60 @5 and did a hop stand.
well after i mashed for 75mins i started my sparge and it clicked over to start heating for the boil. finished my sparge and it was still only at 167F, waited 5 minutes still at 167F >:(
went to panic mode tried the old controller same thing, grabbed my 8 gallon pot pumped the wort into it huffed it out to my propane burner started heating it up for the boil. not happy that my GrainFather wouldnt boil i looked under it and found the reset button, which was tripped, reset added some water started to boil :) so i poured my wort back into the Grainfather and let it rip again. this time it made it to 200F and tripped still using the old controller. tilted it up and reset it again. this time it made it all the way to the end of the boil :) I emailed Brewcraft to see if there is a replacement reset and element.
brewdays are stressful enough without something like this happening.

Is the bottom place nice and shiny?  anything burnt to it?
One thing that can cause this some times is proteins from the rye or wheat malts can stick to the bottom plate,  preventing the heat to be released and causes the heating element to overheat and trip the unit out.

no its nice and shiny like brand new  :) im OCD with keeping my equipment clean.
I think it has something to do with the new controller, I noticed my LED lights in the house pulse while im mashing.
the connect instructions said to leave the switch on normal not mash.
still waiting to here back from brewcraft on it

brewed again on Saturday and after the mash couldnt get it to boil >:(
reset it 15 times then went back to my old equipment, had to clean my wort chiller before using it so my brew day was crazy busy.
Brewcraft did respond and asked me to try out a couple of things which i did and take pictures.
now i need to send all that back to them. unfortunately it is going on two years since i purchased it. hoping they can help me out. nothing is burnt, i think the reset may need replacing.

well i finally did the tests they wanted and took photos.
I also told them i know its out of warranty and would like to replace the Hi-limit.
they replied back they have a 24 month warranty  ;D they told me to contact the company i bought it from and they should replace my boiler :D oh boy i thought i lost my GrainFather.
i emailed the company and am waiting to hear back from them.

I will say i am a little disappointed that they didnt make it so you could change the element for the amount of money people invest in it. I would of been pissed if they told me i couldnt replace the hi limit. i would of bypassed it and started building a electric brewery like i started before buying the grainfather. i do love this unit very easy to clean and doesnt take up a lot of room.

well MoreFlavor(morebeer.com) has already handled my warranty issue and has requested a new boiler be shipped to me. i have to say both companies customer service so far is outstanding.
i am 23 months into owning it and they are replacing it, with just a few simple tests and photos.
I will defiantly be shopping at morebeer.com whenever my LHBS cant supply me with stuff

Sorry to hear that your GF went tits up on you, but glad to find that you have been sorted in a professional way, then sorry again that you have to wait a bit before you get to brew on a GF again. Dizzying, I know.

I've had pretty good luck with morebeer myself. My LHBS just closed so I need some good online resources. Glad you're getting a new machine. I hope this one lasts longer for you Combat.

thanks guys, Yeah i had to return some shanks that i messed up when ordering for my kegerator and Morebeer had no issue at all, i sent them back and on the phone they made sure i was getting the right parts. very helpful customer service. the company i work for is very customer orientated, after all with out them we/any company would be nothing.
i should be set with beer until the new one gets here. if not i can still go back to my old equipment.
one thing that is good if i need to do that, the weather is starting to get warm, so cleaning is easier outside with the hose :)

It's funny you say that bc I've been loving our weather for brewing outside. It's about to get so hot I'm going to wish I could brew inside, lol.

Well, you would love our temps right now. But not the humidity. Especially when I get a boil going in the garage.
