Santa Rita Pale Ale
« on: May 26, 2018, 12:57:43 PM »
The recipe calls for  Carapils Malt (4 oz.) and Crystal 15 (2 oz) and Cascade (1 oz). I plan on dry hopping Amarillo (0.5 oz).

Now the questions:

1) Should I add the Amarillo after high krausen? The cascade is added at flame out.

2) I have 4 oz of Crystal 15. What would happen if I add all 4 oz? Would it then be too malty?

generally i add my dry hops 7-5 days before kegging or bottling.
how much base malt? if its 8-10lbs then 4oz of crystal 15l will add a little bit of a caramel flavor and a little more color to the beer. i would add the 4oz just to use it up, but thats me ;)
shouldnt be to malty, would need more info on the grain bill and mash temps.
keep us posted on what you do

Just an update. I did use all four oz of crystal 15. I also boiled the cascade for 1 minute and then added the Amarillo at flame out. So it was this:

Steep 4oz. Carapils Grains and 4oz. Crystal 15 Grains for 30 minutes between 155-165 degrees. Bring water to a boil, add in Cascade (1 oz.) and Amarillo Hops (.5 oz.), then remove from heat. Added Northwest Pale Ale extract.

Yeast was US-05. My starting gravity was 1.060

nice, that US-05 should chew it down to 1.012 - 1.008 depending on the temps.
