Beer Head
« on: May 26, 2018, 06:51:34 PM »
Made my 1st all grain - a cream ale which turned out well as to taste but lacks a frothy head.

So what methods or ingredients contribute to producing an ale with a decent frothy head?

Thanks all in advance

Brian

multiple things contribute to head retention.
carapils or carafoam help with head retention along with wheat malt.
a good rolling boil. i even heard fast chilling of wort helps, but cant confirm that.
carbonation and other additions to the beer, IE: anything with oils in it will reduce head retention.
good fermentation practice is always good, though it may not help head retention.
what was your recipe for the cream ale?

The recipe was 17 Cream Ale - all grain from this site although it came out with a OG of 1062.
Like I said it tastes good - only been in the bottle for about a week maybe time will improve head.
Thanks for the info.

Time in the bottle always does wonders. Give it time, I would bet over the next few weeks this lack of head issue will resolve itself.

A few more tips came to mind... Maltodextrin is another ingredient that commends a nice head retention. Something that can kill it is an unclean glass, or remnants of detergent from machine washed glass. I find that torrified wheat does the trick for me.
Quote of BB:    I think I've passed that point where I'm no longer under the influence of alcohol. The alcohol is actually under my influence..

FV 1: USB Porter OG: 1.090
FV 2: Network Porter OG: 1.040

Tap 1: Solid IPA 7% ABV
Tap 2: BB's Ginger Brew 6,5
Keg 3 & 4: Clean Slate Saison 17

Also, be careful with how you wash your beer glasses. Too much detergent left on the glass will cause this for sure. Especially if you put them in the dishwasher.
Tap #1 - Cranberry Cider
Tap #2 - Feedback Loop Berliner Weiss
Tap #3 - Planned Obsolescence NEIPA
Tap #4 - Hard Grape Soda

Second tasting 1 week later and the head is improved but not perfect yet. I think more time in the bottle did wonders. I also washed out a glass beer mug with baking soda (seen that somewhere).

BTW there is Carafoam grain in the grain bill.

Thanks for the feedbacl ya'll

Seems the only issue was my patience. Several weeks later and this beer is clearing well and the head has improved.
