First Brew Help
« on: August 04, 2018, 10:08:15 AM »
I got the coopers diy kit and it came with the lager. I followed the instuctions and its now day 6 and the reading was 1.012 the OG was 1.036 so i tasted the beer like they said and i could kind of tast beer but it smells sour. Should i bottle it and wait or is my beer spoiled and need to be tossed out?

Taste it first. If it smells really bad and tastes really bad, then dump it.

I would bottle it, and try it again in a couple weeks. It may just be fine.

what temp did you ferment it at?
also i harp on this alot sanitize sanitize and sanitize  :)
one of the problems when we first start out we rush and forget things ;)
i did with my first 2 brews with a Mr Beer kit. i didnt have good sanitizing practice.
so important things
sanitize everything, i mean everything 8)
temp control so it doesn't go up and down alot.
yeast make sure you take care of the yeast. dont dump it in dry, re-hydrate it.
hope that helps, also let it sit in the fermentor for 14 days minimum
if it already has a sour taste its probably going to get worse, but dont give up on it bottle it and try it in a few weeks. this is how we all learned trial and error.
remember what works for some my not work for you.
keep us posted on what you do.

Up date. I bottled the beer and its been five days now and i put a bottle in the fridge this morning and i just tryed it and wow it was very good. Had a little off flavor but i think after two or three weeks the rest of the beer will be perfect.

Its ready to drink and it taste so much better then store bought. The steeping grains really gave this lager good flavor. Thank you to everyone who helped me and gave me info on here about home brewing. This is my new life long hobby.
