Turning 1 gallon beer kit into 2 gallons
« on: September 26, 2018, 07:06:59 PM »
Hello Everyone,

I'm extract brewing and found a distributor of beer kits that I really enjoy. I am looking to try a 1 gal kit from the site and use a Mr. Beer fermentor for the process. I want to increase my yield to 2 gal instead of 1 gal seeing as the site does not sell 2 gal kits.

Is it wise to add water to a 1 gal of wort to bring it to 2 gal or would I need to add DME as well. Does it give off flavors or destroy the quality of the beer?

Thank you for your help!

you would definitely need to add some extract or you would really thin out the beer.
depending on the kit and price you could double the kit.
do you have a link to the kit?
have you brewed using only DME/LME with adding hops? or just prehopped kits?
maybe we can assist you in a easy extract recipe for 2 gallon batch

Hi Combat,

Here is a link: https://www.boomchugalug.com/product/mush-mouth-oatmeal-stout-1-gallon/

Its a 1 gal oatmeal stout extract kit. What I REALLY want to do is buy the powdered chocolate peanut butter, PB2, at Walmart and add it to the wort for a chocolate peanut butter oatmeal stout. I assume the amount of sugar from the powdered PB would give me more fermentables for a higher alcohol content and potentially add body to the beer? But I also want to increase my yield to 2 gals to make it worth the effort. So if I add powdered PB to an extract kit do you think I can reasonably add  1gal of water and still keep the body of the beer? Or is this more trouble than it's worth?

Thanks for the help!

The nutritional facts on PB2 that I just saw says it has 1g of sugar per 2 tblsp of powder. That's not going to get you any bump in the ABV. The other aspect you're missing here are the IBUs and the overall flavor of the beer. You would cutting those both in half by just adding water. The easiest (and cheapest) thing for you to do would be to just make up a 2 gallon stout extract and steeping grain recipe and go about it that way. Plus, that's a lot more fun anyway. We'll help you with a recipe if you want to go that route.

yeah like Buddhanole said if you just add water to the beer, it will cut everything in half and flavor too.  I have a jar of that PB2 that i will be using this year in a Chocolate milk stout, but i am adding to secondary in a 1 gallon batch.
when are you planning to brew this? my brewing software is on my (shhh dont tell) work computer, next week i could try and throw together a recipe, have you ever used steeping grains? it takes a basic extract kit and boosts the flavor and body, once i did it i never went back to not doing it :)
how big of a pot do you have?
Buddahanole do you think if he gets 2 kits and brews them together, the IBU's would stay close. that might be a easy solution for a test run for Wattyforfun.
i forget are the little brown kegs 2.5 gallon capacity?

That looks good to me. I'm not very familiar using any of the darker DME colors. My former LHBS always liked to start with pale and build the color with just the grains. But I think this should work well.

Hey Guys,

WOW. Thank you so much for the recipe! I have the Northern Brewer starter kit that comes with the 5 gal kettle and also have the 2 gal Mr. Beer fermentor that I use for cider kits. I normally buy extract kits that come with the special steeping grains so I know the procedure fairly well and keep all the directions in a notebook.

I plan to brew in 3 weeks or so. I have a pumpkin ale and hard cider bottle conditioning right now so I am a little short on space and beer bottles.

Combat, what volume of water would I start out with when steeping? And do I need to sterilize the PB2 at all?

Also, is there a computer program for extract recipes?

Thank you !!

Watty

still trying to figure out what to do with the PB2, i havent used it yet. But i have seen a guy on youtube use it in secondary and just dumped it in. so i will have to look up more info on it.

you can buy Beersmith, i think theres a patch for coopers kits.
Myself, i use Brewtarget its free and does about the same thing, but it doesnt have coopers kits.which if you are just doing extract brewing, those kits dont really matter much.

as for how much water i usually add about 1.5 to 2 gallons of 170F water for 30min.
if your pot fits in your oven you could easily do a minimash and cut some of the DME/LME.

Glad to help out when i can, hopefully it turns out good, it will need a few weeks though to bottle condition. I found the higher ABV beers need some age on them.
good luck and keep us posted on what you do.

Hey combat!

Just giving a brewing update. I used your recipe although I could not find Kent Golding hops at my brew store so I had to improvise. My buddy and I brewed 2 versions off your template recipe and had a lot of fun:

First:Dark Choco Ale (No PB) 2 gal
1.75 gal H2O starting
3# Dark DME
8oz Chocolate malt
8oz Crystal 120L

0.5oz Fuggle @ 60 min
0.25oz Fuggle @ 5 min
1/2 Whirlfloc Tablet @ 15min
S-05 yeast
2.0 gal
O.G. 1.070, S.G. (after 7 days) 1.020
Racked into Secondary @ 7days
F.G. 1.016 (@ 9days)

Second: Dark Choco PB Ale 2.5
1.5 Gal H2O starting
3# Dark LME
8oz Chocolate malt
8oz Crystal 120L

0.5 Columbus @ 60min
0.25 Columbus @ 30 min
Whirlfloc @ 15 min
16oz PB powder @ 1 min
S-05
2.5 gal
O.G. 1.052, S.G. (after 6 days 1.020)
Racked into Secondary ~0.5 gal of trube loss
F.G 1.018 after 9 days
Yielded 7.5L (~1.98 gal)

I cracked the first one after 1 week of bottle conditioning. It has little to no carbonation but tastes GREAT.

Should I continue to bottle condition for another week then chill them? Not sure how to get more carbonation in the beer.

awesome, glad you guys had fun.
yeah leave them sit for another week or two, about the same temp you fermented at or a few degrees warmer. how much priming sugar did you use? i have been using 1/2 tsp per bottle.
how did the peanutbutter one turn out? any peanut butter flavor?

I'm experimenting the carbonation drops. Mangrove Jacks brand. I just followed the package instructions.

There was about 1/2 gal of Peanut Butter trube in my primary when I racked it. The Columbus hops spicy profile offsets the PB so there is a subtle hue of PB behind the hoppy chocolate malt flavor. It's quite nice and not totally overwhelming with PB.
