Oaking wine with staves?

so I am getting a broken 55gallon oak barrel from a buddy of mine.
i was thinking of sanding down the outside of the staves and toasting them in the oven.
maybe split them in half and cut them so they fit in a carboy and drop one of them in a batch of wine. Would also like to add it some beers too  :)
has anyone tried this or see an issue with doing it?

Got the barrel yesterday and to my surprise it's a Jack Daniels barrel
I took one stave out and cut it in half and made one foot lengths out of it. Sanded down the outside, it still smells like JD and still very chard on the inside.

Lucky you . . . !

You possess the secret that a local 5-barrel brewery uses to make an awesome Bourbon Barrel Porter.

They take an old bourbon barrel, remove the metal rings, and then break it down into the individual oak staves.

Then they drill a hole at the top of each stave, and literally hang them in the fermentation vessel.

I don't know how many staves they hang in fermenter for a 5-barrel batch, but I'm assuming that if you cut 1 stave in half (or cut it even more) just so it fits into the fermenter you'd be good to go for your first batch.

Or maybe use your chop saw and make your own cubes.
