How to toast your own oak

so i got this info from this Website if you want to read the whole thing.

So i took a stave from the barrel and cut the outside off using a bandsaw. then i cut it into 1 foot lengths. i took those and cut them into cubes about half inch by 3/8 inch, they varied in size i wasnt trying to be perfect. when i am ready to put them in secondary i will roast them in the oven @400f for about an hour, checking every 15min. until i think they are toasted enough.
400f should give me some vanilla/ toasty notes.

Looking fwd to your experiment with these cut up barrel staves, and how much you roast them to obtain a certain flavor.

A local nano brewery drills holes at one end and hangs them in their 5 barrel fermenter for their bourbon barrel porter.

Buddy of mine gives me aged white oak for free.
I use only the heart of the oak and cut off 1 inch down from the bark and the end cuts (chainsaw oil) to make a "brick".
Then I cut it into staves 3/4 inch x 3/4 inch x 5 inches long. Pile em up on a cookie sheet and bake at 400f for 2 hours.

Using a propane torch I char them until the wood turns red on all four sides. I do not char the end grain.
Buy some cheap store bought vodka or crummy store bought "moonshine" and put it in a quart jar along with the charred stave. It will slowly change color in week and will look like store bought whiskey in a month. If you put it in a spot in your house that has temperature swings it will change color quicker. 6 months to a year the alcohol will have completely changed into a more palatable enjoyable drink.

I keep the "aged" oak stave in a empty quart jar. Use 1 stave in corny keg for a whiskey/bourbon notes and 2 or 3 for a heavy stout. It works for me.

Got 3 staves in a stout rite now. Have not used them in wine as of yet.
Heard about people reusing the ones in wine to age whiskey with wine notes.

i have been trimming them with a bandsaw by hand. i cut some into cubes then decided to cut them into 1/2" x 12" staves figure it would be easier to do then the cubes. i don't have a way to chip them up easily.

How about making the oak into chips? Will that take too much effort or are you reusing the staves?

I leave my whiskey staves intact. They are for the better part "sterile" in a jar.
I just remove one and drop it in a keg. If I were to chop one up, I would probably baton one with a heavy stainless knife because I don't have stainless or sanitary saw blades.

I tried aging whiskey with wood chips, and the results are different. More smoke toast flavor, but no vanilla notes with chips. The staves IMO work the magic in 6 months.
