Liquid Yeast Starter
« on: December 18, 2018, 07:33:40 PM »
I've always used dry yeast but are thinking of using a liquid yeast.

Question; can I use a liquid yeast by direct pitching it without making a starter first?

yes and no
so many of my brews i pitch no starter, if my OG is under 1.050 and above that i make a starter.
that said it still depends on style and yeast. my Hefewiezen i pitch wlp300 in at 72F and i get the banana notes that we like OG 1.045-1.048 on average.
for lagers i use 2 packets of dry yeast saflager 34/70 yeast rehydrated.
but check out mrmalty.com for pitching rates.
what yeast are you going to try and style of beer?

Unless the recipe specifically calls for a variety of liquid yeast and you feel more comfortable not deviating from the recipe, I prefer dry yeast.

The cell counts vs a dry pack and a liquid pack are nearly the same, but the shipping and subsequent handling of the liquid yeast is a pain in the ass during the warmer weather.  You are totally under the assumption that the smack pack never exceeded the max ambient temps from the moment it left the manufacturer.

-  Did it exceed the max temp between the mfg and distributor?

-  Did it exceed the max temp while it was stored at the distributor waiting to be sold?

-  Did it exceed the max temp when the distributor shipped it to you or your local HBS?

Not worth the risk IMOP.

I would invest in an inexpensive yeast starter kit with a stir plate.  Surprisingly, when you purchase a beer kit and bring it up on BeerSmith, the cell count yielded from the single pack that comes with the kit is still not enough cells.

Your wort will love the extra cells once you have a starter kit !

one other thing i have heard is shut the stir plate off after 24hr, John Palmer on a brew strong podcast said if you leave the stir plate on after the starter finished reproducing the continuous oxygen from the stir plate could cause the yeast to eat all the reserves they were starting to store.
thought i would throw that in there  :)
