Finally! I can start interacting with you folk. My first Cider.
« on: December 23, 2018, 05:35:23 PM »
Not just my first cider, but my very 1st brew!

I've hovered around the board for awhile - wanting to be part of the 17 Brew Crew - but I've never actually brewed anything, so what could I possibly talk about.

The other day I changed that.

Wish me luck. 1 gallon of pure apple juice. Half a teaspoon of S-04, simmered a handful of raisins in some of the juice. It didn't take off as quickly as I had hoped, so I was afraid I goofed it up (if anyone can goof it up it would be me. But now it's bubbling like crazy! I'm very excited.

I created a video which I hope to share soon.

Now I need to figure out what I'm going to do with it. Carbonation seems a little tricky.

welcome and congrats on your first brew  woohoo!!
ciders can be a little tricky to carb.
i used to use plastic soda bottles to card ciders so i didnt have bottle bombs. seltzer water bottles worked great. and if they get to carbeb iyou can bleed some pressure off.
did you add any extra sugar?
are you planning any other fermentation's? beer or wine?

I'm planning a mead next. Well, hydromel, actually.

My worries about carbonating is having (if I actually need) to pasteurize. Would I not need to If I bottle in PET bottles?

PET bottles expand, i imagine they could still break, but they would just split and not send glass flying everywhere.  when i tried pasteurizing in champagne bottles i popped the corks out of the bottles. even after that the bottles had a slight carbonation to them.
do you have a hydrometer to measure your OG and FG?

I do. As it stands my cider is still bubbling away - 1 bubble every 4 seconds. I'm looking to purchase some swing top bottles.
