Did not clean off new wort chiller
« on: January 04, 2019, 11:38:48 PM »
Hello all

I recently got a copper wort chiller from my lhbs and it did not come with any instructions so eager to use it I added it at 15 mins left in the boil and it worked really well.

Well the beer is now in the begining of stages of fermentation and I google how to clean a wort chiller only to find a thread about cleaning it before you use it to clean off any grease.

Well needless to say I did not do that and I am now worried that whatever grease was on it might be a bad thing. I did not notice any grease on it so it never occured to me to do that.

Any insight or anyone done something like this before?

Interesting question.

It's obviously too late to do anything about it now, but let's use a little physics to answer the question . . .

-  Copper is a very malleable metal.  I can't image that the process of turning the tubing into a coil uses much machining oil at all, if any.

-  If there was that much oil to worry about on the chiller, I'm sure you would have noticed it right away when you were handling it, taking it out of the packaging, attaching the hoses, etc.

-  Oils / lubricants have a specific gravity that is less than beer.  Even a very light oil like WD40 is 0.800, so any traces of oil floating on the surface would have been left behind in your BK along with the trub as you drained the wort from the BK to the fermenter.  And I really doubt it,  but if you do see that shimmering oil color on the surface of your beer with a flashlight after fermentation is completed then I would dump it.

-  Oils will not break apart during the boil.  So if the surface of your beer looks OK with a flashlight, then I would just leave a little beer behind in your fermenter when you are siphoning off, and also leave a little beer behind in your bottling bucket if you want to be extra cautious.

This is only my opinion.  Others will probably respond and just say dump it.  The only reason I responded to your question is because you seem to be looking for some valid reasons and steps you can take to avoid dumping the whole batch (assuming there were any trace amounts of oil on the chiller to begin with).

Thanks for the reply  8)

Ya I did not notice any oil or residue on the coil when handling it or attaching the hoses thats why I never even thought to "break it in" and wash it off before using it.

I just added at 15mins to sanitize everything and it worked very well.

I will keep an eye on it and see if there is any oil residue when it is done fermenting.

I feel like a dodged a bullet but will see  :P
