For those of you who have the Fermentasaurus, I have a question . . .

After I dump the trub from the collection jar for the first time, it is mainly comprised of hot and cold break protein materials, as well as hop materials from the boil.

The 2nd time I dump the collection jar, it is definitely filled with propagated yeast up to the brim.

Now that the collection jar is only half full of propagated yeast, if it weren't for the tiny bubbles of CO2 that are seen breaking away from the yeast in the collection jar and rising to the surface, I would still not consider taking an SG reading because there still appears to be active fermentation going on.

These bubbles coming out of the yeast cake are clearly not "off gassing" of the fermenter.

For those of you who own a Fermentasaurus, what do you do as far as the timing of taking another SG reading to confirm fermentation is done?

Use the TILT hydrometer.
I have never used my fermentasaurus without the pressure kit . So I have only drawn samples from above.

I just got a tilt myself, I dont have a Fermentasaurus yet.
I also bought a Raspberry Pi and plan to use that to monitor the Tilt, so i can see the progress where ever i am at.

Hi Doc.

I have a question about what you've seen in your yeast collection bottle after you've already emptied it at least once after 2 or 3 weeks since the start of active fermentation . . .

When you shine a flashlight into the collection bottle and still see tiny CO2 bubbles coming from the yeast cake but there isn't enough CO2 to show up in the airlock, are the readings from your Tilt hydrometer stable at that point, or is there still some sort of micro fermentation still taking place?

What I've been seeing in my collection bottle it does not appear to be "off gasing" of CO2.  Those micro bubbles appear to be the last micro licks of fermentation actually coming from the yeast cake.

What do you think ?

1. the stand seems very flimsy. I have to move my fermenter around sometimes so i am nervous it would bend or break. 

2. I didnt notice any handles on it for easy moving

3. the overall size of it, it seems tall and probably wouldnt fit my fermentation chamber. what is the real life height with a airlock on it?

4. when swapping jars doesnt oxygen get into the beer when you open the valve or are you really purging the jar with Co2?

i see they are coming out with a Gen 2 of it soon with handles but the stand kind of still looks the same.

Hi Combat32.  My responses to your questions are in CAPS

YES, THE STAND IS FLIMSY.  SOMETIMES I DO LIKE TO SLIGHTLY SWIRL THE WORT IN MY FERMENTERS, BUT I FEEL MORE COMPELLED TO SWIRL THE WORT IN MY FERMENTASAURUS ONLY BECAUSE I SEE A LOT OF PARTICLES STUCK AT THE BOTTOM NEAR THE VALVE AND ALONG THE SIDES OF THE CONICAL.  I THOUGHT THAT WAS THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF INVESTING IN A CONICAL FERMENTER?

2. I didn't notice any handles on it for easy moving.

MINE CAME WITH METAL FOLD-OUT HANDLES AS PART OF THE WIRE FRAME.

I HAVE TO TAKE A SHELF OUT FOR IT TO FIT INTO MY FERMENTATION FRIDGE FOR COLD CRASHING.  I'M JUST ABOUT READY TO MAKE THE DECISION TO ONLY USE THE FERMENTASAURIS AS A PRIMARY, AND THEN TRANSFER TO A SECONDARY.  BUT I AM SO IN LOVE WITH ALL OF THAT EXTRA HEAD SPACE SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO DEAL WITH A BLOW-OFF.

4. When swapping jars doesn't oxygen get into the beer when you open the valve or are you really purging the jar with CO2?

YES, THERE IS A BURP OF O2 WHEN CHANGING OUT THE JARS, BUT I'M HOPING THAT SURGE OF AN AIR BUBBLE CLEARS THE VALVE, AND POSSIBLY ADDS SOME EXTRA O2 FOR THE REST OF THE FERMENATION.

BTW . . . The manufacturer has increased the OD of the valve assembly at the bottom due to home brewer's feedback.

The Fermentasaurus is not entirely what I had hoped for.  But it's still a conical fermenter, and I'd like to leave on a positive note . . . I do like how I can drop in a full mason jar's worth of secondary additions in a steeping bag through the fermenter's very large lid.  And still be able to clean it right out after the fermenter is ready to be cleaned.

thanks, one of the things i really like about it is that it is clear and you can see whats happening. i like to see the yeast swirling around working their magic when i take a peak  :D
thats why i never liked buckets and loved my glass carboy then fell in love with fermonster which i now have 2 of those and use my glass for sours.

ps I love my tilt i have a raspberry pi logging it to my google sheet and to track fermentation this thing is awesome. brewing my 4th lager with it and all seems well, took the guess work out of doing the dialectal rest. still learning Lagers. I raised the temp to 64F at 1.025 it is now sitting at 1.010 OG was 1.052 fermented at 54F

you will love it, the tracking is awesome, the sheets have graphs and you can save them too.

then i went to the Tilt website and downloaded this and followed the instructions

The other feature that I like about the Fermentasaurus is the wide opening.  It measures 3.125" (7.94cm).

This allows you to use full size steeping socks rather than using multiple small hop socks when adding large amounts of ingredients during secondary fermentation.

The pics below show how easily 8oz of coffee beans and 3oz of Cocao Nibs that had soaked in a pint of vanilla flavored vodka were added to the fermenter without having to force it through the opening.

I have completed a number of brews now using the Fermentasaurus.  Enough brews where I think I can weigh in to say it was a waste of money.

The glam and prestige of being able to say that "I have a conical fermenter" has worn pretty thin.

Pros

-  Wide opening at the top for being able to reach in far enough to clean the dried up krausen around where the liquid level was.

-  Huge head space for a typical 5 gallon batch.  I never even came close to a blow off.

Cons

-  There is so much yeast that builds up along the sides of the cone that never drops down through the valve and into the collection jar.  Even swirling the fermenter to try and knock it down doesn't work.  All of this build up eventually gets into the keg or the bottling bucket once I replace the collection jar with the hose connection for the transfer.

-  The valve that came with the product leaked between the factory screwed connections.  Luckily Northern Brewer sent me another assembly for free.

-  The stand is very flimsy.

-  The overall height is so large I have to take a shelf out of my fermentation refrigerator when I cold crash.

-  Here's an unexpected comment  . . . Even though the Fermentasaurus is designed as a pressure vessel, the walls are so thin that even brief moments in and out of the fermentation refrigerator cause extreme pressure changes where my air lock is bubbling out foam, or sucking in so much StarSan where I have to refill it.  Once the bubbling (either in or out) stops, I have to purge the headspace with CO2 to purge all of the ambient air that got sucked in just to prevent the beer from oxidizing.

Conclusion

-  I think I get a better compaction of trub and yeast at the bottom of a regular carboy that doesn't transfer over to the bottling bucket or keg.  Clearer beer was the whole point of buying a conical fermenter.

-  The headspace is awesome, but I'd rather buy fermenters that are at least 7 gallons and have wide openings for cleaning.

-  Hopefully revision 2 of the Fermentasaurus will hopefully be better.

wow, you saved me some money.
I was going to buy one this summer.
the cone had me concerned, even some of my carboys hold a little yeast on the sides.
but a little swirl and it falls down.
one of the guys i watch on youtube has the Catalyst and he added a spigot to the side to pull samples and fill his keg.
do you have the pressure kit with yours? not sure if that would of helped with cold crashing.
on another note do you cold crash fast or slow, I heard that you should cold crash slowly so the yeast dont stress.

Fast or slow on the cold crash really doesn't matter.

Here is a pic "after" I had already knocked down / stirred out the yeast from sides of the fermenter 2 days after I had added the PVPP clarifier.

The picture shows approx 5 inches of yeast build up on the sides of the conical portion of the Fermentasaurus.

This is equal to the approx 5 inches of yeast build on the sides of the conical portion of the Fermentasaurus before I had knocked it down with my stir stick.

Whatever particulate that is in suspension seems to stick to the sides of the Fermentasaurus rather than migrate down into the collection jar.

If you look closely at the pic, the collection jar was not full of yeast.  There was till plenty of open space to collect what I had stirred and knocked down off the sides of the cone.

Total waste of money.  I like my carboys much better.
