I moved this posting from another forum thread because I think the Tilt Hydrometer deserves it's own topic . . .

I love my tilt.  I have a raspberry pi logging it to my google sheet and to track fermentation.  This thing is awesome

Hi Combat32.

So I know from your previous posts about the Raspberry Pi you are using to weigh your ball lock kegs, but how does the average person purchase this mini computer, get it to read the Bluetooth signal of specific gravity and temperature from the Tilt Hydrometer, and get it to upload data on a periodic basis to your Google Sheet?

THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I WANT !

The Tilt Hydrometer is awesome.  I love how it constantly transmits specific gravity and temperature data from within your fermenter, but only if your smartphone app is in the vicinity to pick it up.

I would really love to have a device like a Raspberry Pi that is uploading data on a real-time basis at least once per day.

you will love it, the tracking is awesome, the sheets have graphs and you can save them too.
I bought mine on amazon as a kit Amozon Raspberrypi Kit
then i went to the Tilt website and downloaded this and followed the instructions

I will say when i first started it, i was having a hard time figuring out the calibration on my phone.
but now that i have the RaspberryPi running i can access it from my web browser and the configuration page is way nicer then the app. my OG was way off when i started and i got that fixed, i know it was right, i used my refractometer and my hydrometer both said 1.052 or damn close  ;)  the tilt was saying 1.044. in the morning i placed it in room temp water for like an hour and a half while i was mashing. it was reading 1.000 and once in awhile it would read 0.999 so i know that was good, but i didnt notice i was supposed to put it in a known gravity solution after the water. i did change my OG on the tilt to 1.052 before pitching my yeast, it was chilling down to 52F  so my next brew with it should be easier to calibrate.

I had the Raspberry Pi in my Amazon Shopping cart and then checked out.

Then I woke up the next day and said "I have enough technology in my life right now".

I decided that coming home from work and standing next to the fermenter to get a live Bluetooth reading from the Tilt is fine for now.

It gives me something to do in the basement because I am going down there to check on the brews anyway.

technology is addictive, im already trying to figure out if its possible to use the spreadsheet to control my temp controller to raise my temps  :) and then drop them three days before kegging.
its a good thing im not a programmer, i would have crazy amounts of control of my brewing setup  :o   
I am getting ready to send my water to wardlabs to test it and start playing around with water chemistry. my PH meter broke so i need a new one. should of bought a good one.

The Pocket Pro PH meter from Hach is one of the best investments I made.

PH test strips really suck.  Even when you buy a particular brand that has a known error of a few 10ths that you know you need to compensate for.

My beers improved once I was able to get the pH adjusted and under control within the first 15 minutes of mashing.

Besides storing the pH element in distilled water, you also need the 2 buffer solutions that are shown on the bottom of this Amazon link so you can calibrate the device.

Yeah i got the 4.0 and 7.0 for calibrating.
but i heard storing them in distilled water isnt good? how long have you been storing it like that?
just curious, i dont always believe what i hear or read on the internets  ;)

Hi Combat32

As you know, I work in a power plant, and boiler chemistry is something that's done twice per day.

The probe for our pH meter in our chem lab is always stored "wet" with the tip of the probe stored in a small flask of distilled water.

If fact, the Hach website says . . .   "The pH models should be stored with a couple drops of tap water or deionized water in the cap to keep the bulb hydrated".

Thanks, I have been meaning to ask my cousin too, his son is a microbiologist.
I really need to hang out with my cuz, he started brewing last year and went all in on a three pot system electric that he made him self. problem is i hate to drink one beer and have to drive, i know one is nothing, but its not worth the risk or hassle.
have you used your tilt yet? once you start seeing that data on the spreadsheet, your going to be like whoa those yeasties are animals once you see how fast they can chew up the sugars  :)
I have mine set with the RaspPI to take a reading every 60min so i can see what they do in an hour.

I'm really sorry that I didn't buy a Tilt Hydrometer sooner.

So many wasted days of being too afraid to open the fermenter and take another SG reading and risk contamination.

Now I know exactly what day fermentation has been completed, and I give it another week just to make sure the yeast has a chance to clean things up.

I think those micro bubbles of CO2 that I would occasionally see in the air lock before using the Tilt Hydrometer were signs of off-gasing or maybe even signs that there was still a little bit of micro sugars left for the yeast to eat, but no enough to change SG reading and delay kegging or bottling.

love my Tilt,  going to talk with my brotherinlaw and see if he can write a program to work with my fermentation chamber Raspberry PI and change the temps while it ferments. so it will raise the temp to do a diacetyl rest automatically and then drop it once it reachs target OG. plus i am starting to raise the temp at the end of fermentation on ales as while. plus i want to dry hop at 68F now for my IPA's and see if i get more aroma.
